Addons in-game cannot access the internet in any way.

So to answer your question. No, it can't.

The alternative would be to have the addon do the same calculations on a player's gear that the website currently does, since all the info is available in-game.

I'm quite certain a few addons pull from online databases, but if you're certain...

Those addons require third-party programs that run in the background and constantly download updates to a cache which can be read by the in-game addon. This can be done using wowheroes but would be very resource intensive on their side. In addition, it would not be real-time. Your third-party app would have to know the names of everybody on your server, and maintain a local cache of these players in order for this to be half-way decent.

Hi All,

First, Great piece of work you've done here.
I was wondering when would this wonderful api see the light?

i'd be interested by the following info (in order of priority)
input by: Character name or Guild name (mandatory) + Realmname (mandatory) + Region.

returns:
Region
Realmname
Guildname
Character name [
Raw Score
Enchant Score
current gear/toon caracteristics.
a list of all currently equipped items.
URL to the character/guild profile on wow-heroes
]

Cheers :)

And these program files are mysteriously hidden from my site? Because I have looked through them and never seen anything other than the lua script files, xml files and other associated non-program files for the Addon.

In any case, the point is not to debate the specifics of how it is done. It could be done. I think many people would find it useful, and there's no reason to believe that the resource demand on wow-heroes would be any different than having people go through the site as they can now and look up all of the information. So long as the Addon was not constantly updated and updated only when the user asked it to, then it would be doing little more than what the user could do themselves on the site.

The major issue then is that such an addon could draw traffic away from wow-heroes, which uses ads in order to keep the website running. Without the revenue from the ads, it would likely cost too much for the administrators to maintain. That's one of the big dilemmas right there.

I would be very happy that we avoid digressing too much.

this thread is about having a soap / rest / whatever-the-format webservice so that guild websites can rate their guildies' equipment calling wow-heroes.

Is it a priority for wow-heroes folks?

thanks

i'd change this a little bit to save time/info transport

Character name [
Raw Score
Enchant Score
spec/dual spec
a list of all currently equipped items. <------ remove that due to the fact it could be abused for personal armory pages and would remove ALLOT of info and make things work faster too when quiering 20+ or even 100+ characters
URL to the character/guild profile on wow-heroes <---- this is simplery build on the persons website and is not required in my mind to be honest
]

so simperly it would be

charname
rawscore
gemscore
enchantscore
combinedscore
highest score achieved
spec/dualspec

this format would save bandwidth time and make the code allot more streamlined for scripting with

Is this still being worked on or has it already rolled out? I have been searching the net for a way to do this for our guild site and have yet to find anything short of manually updating it myself. LOL This would, indeed, make me a very happy person. :)

IMPORTANT: This feature is in beta testing phase now. If everything goes ok, we will make it official in a month or so, but at the moment we can't promise that there won't be any changes to it.

GUILD XML TEMPLATE:
Code: Select all
http://xml.wow-heroes.com/xml-guild.php?z=ZONE&r=REALM&g=GUILD

Replace ZONE with either eu or us depending if you play on European or United States realms.
Replace REALM with your realm name
Replace GUILD with your guild name

Guild members are sorted by level and score

You can try it out on the following sample link:
http://xml.wow-heroes.com/xml-guild.php?z=eu&r=Magtheridon&g=Ensidia

At the moment we're focusing on guild lists so that people can use this info on their guild web sites. We hope you'll like it and find it useful. If possible, please make a link back to wow-heroes to spread the love :)

Sample logos:

Code: Select all
<a href="http://www.wow-heroes.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://static.wow-heroes.com/images/logo90x42.png" width="90" height="42" border="0" alt="" /></a>

I'm quite surprised this took so much work.
I've been using http://wow-heroes.com/get_guild_list.php?gzone=EU&gserver=Outland&guildname=mysth&filter=111111111111111111111111111111&gr1=0&gr2=9&stamp=1231654 to get my XML since late 2008.
Going to switch over to this new cleaner solution for sure  and I'll make sure to place a Wow-Heroes linkback altough all my guildies prob use it already :D

That link was never published and it was used for internal wow-heroes operation (although everyone could find it by digging a bit through javascript). We didn't want it to be public because we were not sure that our servers would handle the amount of requests it could potentially require. WoW-Heroes now has over 200.000 visits each day and we've upgraded hardware several times so we hope we're ready for this next step :)

If this goes as planned, we'll probably disable the old link (the one you used) and just leave the new one for everyone :)
Thanks for support ;)
