why do priests in general have bad dps i only put up shadow priest cuz that is what i have

Actually, you just have to know how to play a Priest. I am shadow/healz and when I DPS I am usually top 3 in the runs. Specially in Heroics, I am usually top DPS.

Well, when you reach the top of your talent spec, you will realize that Shadow DPS is not only one of the best forms of ADD DPS, be we are also very high contributors to the raid as well as extremely survivable. Given our raid buffs, the additional hit to all casters, and the ability to disperse/power word:shield/flash heal, a shadow priest is a heavy contender in dps.

Along with this, given the proper gems/enchants/gear/rotation, you could be significantly reducing your dps. The rotation and gear specialization is very important to how your shadow priest runs.
